I was asked to provide UX support for a product concept for demonstration at the company’s annual innovation event. The concept was a Slack app that could be used by non-technical users to automate their business tasks in a highly customisable way, using our suite of cloud-based business tools (TIBCO Connected Intelligence Cloud) plus third-party business tools, but without leaving Slack. This included admin-level customisation and configuration, flexible end-user task configuration, and the ability to save and re-use recipes that could be triggered with either a simple syntax or an even simpler Slack emoji. Time was limited.
The process we used was lean, iterative design using internal feedback, with a view to using the alpha build of the app for user testing and refinement.
The biggest challenge was finding a solution that offered the flexibility of syntax, but did not create a barrier by forcing users to learn syntax to use the tool. After exploring various approaches we settled on a drop-down -based design that supported optional syntax use for more advanced users.
The app was demonstrated at TIBCO NOW and the next phase of development is pending.
